So far, just laying down the parts were trouble free and simple. This was looking like a great entry level wood boat kit! I looked at the plans and saw if you drew a center line from the transom to the cut-water,the top and bottom would fan out from aft to fore. This gave the appearance of the sheer angling up and the bottom angling down, progressively. The two parts are referred to as S 1.ĭay 3:All 8 of the frames were epoxied to the sheer and angled with a jig.Next, the forward keel was epoxied in the slots from frame 1 thru frame 4.As stated in the instructions, the frames are supposed to slant aft to give the proper shape of the boat.Care was taken to note which sides of the doublers faced as it made a difference how the cockpit floor was to be assembled. ![]() In this thread,I'll document the steps involved for the build. As a beginner in model boating,it's my pleasure to share the journey with the community learning a new model building discipline. It must be said that a lot was learned and still more to learn about!ĭay 1: The kit was inventoried to check quality of the parts and most important, read and understand the plans and instructions! All of the light ply parts were labeled in pencil and freed from their die cut sheets. This took a bit of effort because the die cutting wasn't deep enough.Perhaps attributed to worn out tooling. Also, care had to be taken with small edges around the notched areas. These could be easily snapped off! Not to worry,it was a simple repair. The doubling parts on the frames were glued with Titebond 3 wood glue.ĭay 2: More prep work on the frames.A small balsa wood box was built up on frame 4 after drilling a 1/4" hole for the steering column. The forward keel was pinned down after gluing the two halves together with the 15 task of the day was to glue and pin down the sheer halves with 15 min epoxy. Last year, I completed my first RC wooden boat kit.I began the project in July of 2019 and made the first drive in December of the same year.I ordered my Dumas 1949 Chris -Craft 19' Runabout earlier that summer from MACK products along with a brush-less propulsion system and Z-Poxy finishing resin. We communicated back and forth to answer my questions about the project.Rich was quite helpful and knowledgeable about this segment of the RC hobby. For many years, I've been a longtime modeler In both static and RC model aircraft.I still fly all of my current projects as much as possible.īack when my family and I was ordering our supplies from Tower Hobbies,I've always admired the Chris-Craft boats featured in the mail out catalog. When my Dad got his first ready to run Tug boat,we discovered that model boating was fun too! Nevertheless,I was inspired to build my first wooden boat kit. ![]()
